Ghostbusters By Tom Keogh
Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis wrote the script, but Bill Murray gets all
the best lines and moments in this 1984 comedy directed by Ivan Reitman (Meatballs).
The three comics, plus Ernie Hudson, play the New York City-based team
that provides supernatural pest control, and Sigourney Weaver is the love
interest possessed by an ancient demon. Reitman and company are full of
original ideas about hobgoblins--who knew they could "slime"
people with green plasma goo?--but hovering above the plot is Murray's
patented ironic view of all the action. Still a lot of fun, and an obvious
model for sci-fi comedies such as Men in Black.
Academy Awards
Ghostbusters received Academy Award
nominations for Music Best Song (Ray Parker, Jr. - Music & Lyrics) and
for Special Visual Effects (Richard Edlund, John Bruno, Mark Vargo, Chuck
Gaspar).

"This was the first movie I ever saw that combined the scary aspect of the supernatural with side-splitting humour from the likes of Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd.
There is an almost slap-stick feel to the whole movie and the seriousness of the supernatural situation is played of beautifully against the lighter side.
Characters are really well defined and this would account for the fact a cartoon series was made from the movie.
I like the fact that the special effects weren't computer generated. I think it adds to the unique character of the film and is an indicative of the time in 20th century history it was made in. [Editor's note: I understand what you are saying here - there's a certain charm to outdated special effects - but just want to point out that us venerable humans made those computers, the software, and every single bit of data used to make "computer generated" graphics and such CG special effects are as human and artful as any created with previous technologies.]
The movie was my fantasy film as a youngster, and I still watch it now and then to take me back to that "wouldn't it be great" feeling I had as a kid that reality has attempted to sap out of me as an adult." --KiwiKid |
