Joan Jett & Blackhearts - I Love Rock N' Roll .gif) By Rob O'Connor
A surprise early-'80s superstar, Joan Jett had pretty much been left
for dead by a record industry that was choosing not to remember her
all-female teenage band the Runaways. Her second solo album, I Love
Rock n Roll cherished a loud guitar crunch clearly not in fashion in
the dance pop-lite era. But Jett also knew the value of a hook, and the
songs contained herein use them to memorable effect. The title track
became an anthem. Her resuscitation of Tommy James and the Shondells'
"Crimson and Clover" proved she meant it. "(I'm Gonna) Run
Away" and "Nag" solidified her point. The jump-start was
immediate and led Jett to record a succession of satisfying albums.

"The album that made me a freak, the song that expanded my mind past Dukes of Hazard and Dallas, the woman that made me think strange and exciting thoughts in the seventh grade. Joan Jet made rock and roll my religion, my life. Everyone needs a copy of this record, just like they need Desolation Boulevard and Raw Power by the Stooges." --Greyrat | "My favorite song now is I Love Rock 'N Roll!!! It is, by far, the best song, and it somewhat angers me that Britney Spears put that song on her CD because some people think that SHE made the song, but sHE DIDN'T! But, the good thing about her "bringing up" I Love Rock 'N Roll is that I would not know the song, (I was born in 1988) but now i do. P.S. Joan Jett is AWESOME! [Editor's note: Joan Jett put Tommy James' 1967 hit Crimson and Clover on her album. "Covering" someone's song is usually a compliment.]" --linz |
