Bruce Springsteen - Nebraska .gif) By Daniel Durchholz
Hot on the heels of The River, his commercial breakthrough,
Springsteen's decision to release the stark, demo-quality Nebraska
seems downright perverse. But the genius of the album is
unmistakable--with just an acoustic guitar and his howling harmonica to
back him, Springsteen tells the stories of characters walking on both
sides of the law, some of them directly on the line in between. The effect
is that of a powerful series of black-and-white photographs--the details
are bleak in and of themselves, but they ignite the imagination in ways
that are more satisfying than full-color shots would be. "Mansion on
the Hill," "Highway Patrolman," "Atlantic City,"
and the frightening "Nebraska" are among the most sharply
rendered and memorable works of Springsteen's career.

"I first heard this album at a party when I was 17, the dark imagery, sadness, and believable characters stayed with me ever since. Did young Johnny come back? Would his 8 year old son remember his hometown? 99 years for a drunken murder???
I bought the album and have held onto it ever since. I still play it loud whenever I need cheering up - strangely enough. To dispell the "meaness in this world" I guess.
5 big stars out of 5" --Sheldon Starr | "Gritty, real emotion, back to the basics rock and roll, it's Springsteen at his best. The message: Hang in there you might survive in spite of yourself." --Mark H |
