Paul Simon - Hearts and Bones .gif) By Sam Sutherland
One of Paul Simon's most accomplished albums, Hearts & Bones
is also among his least appreciated, a commercial disappointment at the
time of its release due more to Simon's darker themes than to any
discernible decline in his powers as a songwriter or instincts as a
producer. The best songs here are among his most nakedly self-referential,
from the bittersweet title song, sifting through the ashes of his failed
marriage, to the self-recriminating "Think Too Much (a)" (as if
to prove the point, he includes two songs with the title) and the
fatalistic "Train in the Distance." "René and Georgette
Magritte with Their Dog after the War" is a polished gem, both a
musical analogue to the artist's dead- pan surrealism and a unique love
song, and "The Late Great Johnny Ace" links the slain doo-wopper
to the slain John Lennon. If there were justice in the set's cool
reception, it was Simon's subsequent decision to ignore commercial
stratagems altogether--a leap that yielded his next, groundbreaking album,
Graceland.

"I was young and single when I bought my first copy of Hearts and Bones. More than twenty years and several album copies later, I am still listening to it. The onslaught of middle age and the realities of my own marital affair have only made the music and its lyrics more personal and meaningful to me.
There's really not one song in the album that I like more than the others, but if I would be forced to choose, I'd pick Train in the Distance and Rene and Georgette Magritte as my favorites. I'd throw in the title song, too, and Allergies, and Cars.....As I said, I like ALL of them.
For me, it is the intense, introspective poetry of the lyrics more than its clean vocals and fresh rhythms which make this album a truly indispensable part of my Paul Simon collection." --Ed Cruz | "YES!! Hearts and Bones is far better than its sales suggest, mainly due to the lyrical genius which shines through every track, poetry only matched on Rhythm of the Saints. Savour every juxtaposition!" --GP John |
