By Patrick Mondout

Prince put together his first "girl group" in late 1981 fronted by Canadian beauty Denise Matthews, whom he convinced to use the stage name Vanity (she rejected his first choice: Vagina). They released their only album (Vanity 6) in 1982 and had a minor hit with Nasty Girl.

Prince and Vanity broke up during the lead up to the movie Purple Rain and Prince had a casting call to find not only a new actress for the female lead in his new movie, but a singer for his "girl group." He found his match in Patricia Kotero, whom he convinced to use the stage name Apollonia. Hence Apollonia 6.

As for this album, it contains mostly Prince's b-material (just like Vanity 6) and the musicians are virtually everyone he was working with at the time including Sheila E. The album had two singles. The first was featured prominently in the movie Purple Rain and was provocatively called Sex Shooter. The second was Blue Limousine. Neither charted though the first helped the album make it to #24 on the R&B charts and #62 on the pop charts. Not bad for mostly filler tracks by an untrained vocalist.

It all could have been quite different, however. There were two other songs recorded for and originally included on this album before it went to press. One was The Glamorous Life. Sheila E., who took the song to the top ten in late 1984, has said that Prince wrote it about Apollonia but that it was "too musical" to be included on her album. The second was Manic Monday! Perhaps Prince pulled the track back for the same reason but thank goodness he did! It was butchered by the Apollonia's untrained voice and might have languished for years (as Nothing Compares 2 U did before Sinead O'Conner immortalized it) before being rediscovered as a pop masterpiece. Perhaps I'm being unfair as what I have heard was only an unfinished demo; perhaps with The Glamorous Life and Manic Monday along with Sex Shooter, Apollonia 6 might have gone on to record a string of platinum albums. But after giving another listen to Happy Birthday, Mr. Christian, me thinks not.

Alas, the album is only for serious fans of the Minneapolis Sound and more specifically, Prince completists. Note that the only legit CD release of Apollonia 6 comes from Japan and there are plenty of fakes because of the sky-high price it commands.
