Van Halen - 1984 .gif) By Genevieve Williams
1984 was a successful record not only because it contained
solid, catchy hard rock, but also because it incorporated synthesizers
into the mix, the first metal album to do so to any serious extent.
Although the advances in electronic music make this material sound dated
now, it's still a highlight of Van Halen's career. Songs like
"Jump" contain a pop element that gave 1984 mainstream
appeal, and David Lee Roth turned the frontman role into an art form on
songs such as "Panama," "Hot for Teacher," "Drop
Dead Legs," and "I'll Wait." To a large extent, it was 1984
that set the standard for '80s pop metal, and David Lee Roth who set the
standard (or takes the blame, depending on your point of view) for the
aggressively good-time attitude most pop-metal bands took for their own.

"While some may remember the Top 40 hits Jump and I'll Wait, this album will be remembered by most Van Halen fans for perhaps the most incredible guitar work ever laid down on an album. Top Jimmy, Drop Dead Legs, Hot for Teacher, Girl Gone Bad, and House of Pain are unbelievable not only for their guitar wizardry, but for the intense Rock 'n Roll which is comparable to anything being put out there today. Girl Gone Bad and House of Pain may be the two best back to back tunes Van Halen ever put on any album.
1984 was a watershed album and put on display the enormous talent and versatility of Van Halen for all the world to see." --AROD | "When I bought 1984 by Van Halen at the time it was just another great rock album from this great rock band at the height of their prowess even though the mainstream media were treating them like they were some kind of fad because of their hit single Jump which I thought was ridiculous. I consider 1984 to be the last great classic rock album by a legendary rock band looking back because it's creatively, musically & artistically a masterpiece despite the fact that Eddie Van Halen & David Lee Roth weren't getting along personally & professionally but all good things must come to an end. I saw VH live at the old Charlotte Coliseum back in 84 which is one of the greatest concert experiences of my youth when they were the kings of rock with few equals while their three great classic videos for Jump, Panama & Hot For Teacher are visual masterpieces as well which are timeless." --Wayne L. |
