Kate Bush - Hounds of Love .gif) By Barney Hoskyns
Few women have expanded the vocabulary of rock as bewitchingly as Kate
Bush; among male stars, only Prince may have taken as many risks. Hounds
of Love saw Bush reining in the kookier aspects of The Dreaming,
channelling them into epic electro-pop that tackled big issues of life and
death and God with gripping drama and intensity. "Running Up That
Hill" was one of the great singles of the '80s;
"Cloudbusting" was string-driven, magically pretty; "Jig of
Life" showed that Bush is one of the few pop artists who can flirt
with Celtic mysticism without sounding twee or trite. Forget the riot
grrrls: Bush is the real thing.

"Probably one of the most important albums of the Awesome80s and probably the album that made people take female song writers seriously at last. The structure and variety is amazing, the imagination on the music and lyrical content stunning." --DaveM | "I remember I was a big Duran Duran fan at the time I first saw videos for Running Up That Hill and Hounds of Love by Kate Bush.
I was struck by the sheer theatricals of this woman, like nothing ever seen on Awesome80s T. V. - especially Hounds of Love, where she is chased frantically through a forest with her lover; a thunderous beat matched with fast editing.
It was this video that sent me straight to Woolies to buy the album, which equally enchanted me. Running Up That Hill has a strident beat and always reminded me of a rainy day, whilst the other side of the album 'The Ninth Wave' - I think, was inspired by a poem written by Tennison.
This album was hailed as her finest achievement, and an excellent showcase for her particular type of message." --BAZ |
