Mavis Staples - Time Waits for No One Click here to see this CD at Amazon.com!

By Patrick Mondout

Memphis gospel and soul singer Mavis Staples might have seemed an odd pairing with Prince, but they produced this wonderful album together which went absolutely nowhere. One problem with the album's promotion was that the lead single, 20th Century Express, was produced and written by longtime Staples Singers producers/writers Al Bell, Home Banks, and Lester Snell while the second single, Jaguar, and five of the remaining six songs were produced and written by Prince. These were contrasting styles and neither found their intended audience. Long-time Staples Singers fans probably didn't even know she had an album out and she was too old-school to merit airplay on urban stations - even with the funky rhythm-guitar-based Jaguar.

Both singles as well as the title track failed to chart anywhere despite a cameo appearance by Prince in the Time Waits for No One video and the CD is hard to find today.

Mavis Staples appeared in Prince's third movie, the ill-fated Graffiti Bridge in 1990 as Melody Cool, which also happens to be the name of Prince-penned song she recorded for the soundtrack. The duo recorded another album, The Voice, in the early 90s which included several good tracks though the best, Kain't Hold Back, wasn't written by Prince.
