N.W.A - Straight Outta Compton .gif) By David Cantwell
A lone voice sneers "You are about to witness the strength of
street knowledge," and with that warning the greatest-ever gangsta
album begins. Then these Niggas with Attitude--wicked rhymes by Ice Cube,
Easy E, and MC Ren; soulful production courtesy Dr. Dre; beats provided by
DJ Yella--come barreling into your face, just daring you to ignore the
streets of Compton (or any American city) even one day longer. From the
anti-police brutality anthem "F__k Tha Police" to the angry,
unflinching realism of "Gangsta Gangsta," to the pro-free speech
"Express Yourself," this is slammin' and ruthless.

"NWA was the most influencial hip hop group of all-time. I remember every muthafucka I knew back then was sportin' a black Raiders, or Kings hat. Basically, they not only changed Rap music, but they also put us (the West Coast) on the map when it comes to hip hop fashion. I remember going out to Minneapolis to visit my uncle one year when I was a junior in high school and seeing all the cats OUT THERE were even wearing Raiders stuff! This, all due to NWA." --RefisDaGoon | "Despite the language used on this album i really liked it. Straight Outta Compton is a very fresh sounding song not only because even today. considering the angst ridden and overall angry attitude of most "popular" music Straight Outta Compton is still very much in style (except for maybe the bubble gum crowd). N.W.A did for rap what Guns 'n' Roses did for hard rock, gave it a new energy and direction. While alot of kids were listening to the Fresh Prince and Kid 'n Play, NWA offered a more thought provoking and energized option. At home I had keep the volume low while enjoying this great album. The parents definitely did not get this." --Rick1970 |
