1980 Topps Superstar PhotosBy Patrick Mondout
Topps produced a set of 60 oversized (nearly 5x7) "Superstar
Photos" as a test issue in 1980. These "supers" featured
some of the sharpest photography that had ever been seen on Topps cards
plus a facsimile autograph. The cards were popular at first and were
distributed in three card packs.
As with the 1979
Topps comics, some hobby dealers once again tried to snap up cases of
these in a bit of mindless speculation and many got stuck with cases that
no one wanted after the initial interest in the summer died down. It was
not hard to find dealers at trade shows in the mid-Awesome80s still
attempting to sell sets of these for far more than anyone would pay.
Perhaps due to the unexpected demand, Topps printed all sixty cards
again, but this time on thinner gray card stock. These cards were
distributed a number of ways, including five card cello packs. The
white-backed cards have always sold for more.
Cases with the big black X's painted on them (indicating they were
excess inventory from Topps) of those grayback cards can still be found
unopened today.
