1982 Topps Baseball

By Patrick Mondout

More on this set in the days to come (6/30/2005).

No runs, no hits, three errors!

Topps had a hard time with black ink in 1982. First they used too much of it on George Foster's All-Star card (the black facsimile signature did not appear on any other All-Star cards). Next they forgot to use it on the Pascual Perez card where it should list his position. Lastly, about 50-100 each of the "A", "B", and "C" sheets of cards (there were six that made up this set) were printed after the black ink ran out, leaving cards that should have a signature on the front (such as the Dave Winfield above) without one and with blank backs. The first two are variations and were corrected and the Perez card sells for as much as $40. The "blackless" cards are so rare that it is hard to place a value on them. Most collectors shun simple misprints or miscuts, but not these. Note also that there are counterfeit Ripken rookies circulating with blank backs.
