1985-86 Star Company Basketball Cards

By Patrick Mondout

With the Star Company beginning to focus on one player sets of cards - including in other sports like baseball - this would be the last of the great Star Co. basketball card sets (Fleer would get the license for 1986).

Other sets that are not part of the 172 card set include the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar set of 18 cards, the Coach's set of 10 cards, the Crunch 'n Munch set of 11 cards (very rare), the Last 11 Rookies of the Year set, the Lite Beer All-Stars (13 cards), Schick Legends game participants (24 cards), an All-Rookie team set of 11, the "Lakers Champs" set (which actually featured photos from the championship series), a set of Michael Jordan, and a Best of the New/Best of the Old set of 8 cards given to dealers and nearly impossible to find now.

The Star Company also made 5x7 sets of Court Kings for the second straight year (see Magic Johnson below) and the Gatorade-sponsored Slam Dunk Contest (see Michael Jordan, below). Because Charles Barkley pulled out of the competition at the last minute (Terence Stansbury made the most of his chance to replace him), the Barkley card was pulled. The Barkley cards entered the hobby years after they were printed.

There were also two sets printed in 1986 (on the same sheet) but not released until the early 1990s. They were a Magic Johnson set and a "Best of the Best" set. These were sold as complete sheets and later cut by the hobbyists/dealers who bought them, thus there are no bags of these sets (or at least their shouldn't be - you never can tell what the Star Co. did at the time or later).

While the Star Company did not change their design at all through their three years of exclusive NBA sets, they are very colorful and very collectible and the 5x7 cards in particular look very impressive in person.
