1987 Draft

By Patrick Mondout

Poor Tampa Bay. They traded away what turned out to be the first pick in the '84 draft for QB Jack Thompson. In 1982 they accidentally selected Sean Farrell instead of Booker Reese and then traded a '83 first rounder to get Reese in the second round (thus missing out on Jim Kelly and Dan Marino the next year). They took Bo Jackson number one overall in the 1986 draft only to see him sign with the Kansas City Royals. They finally got lucky when 1984 USFL supplemental pick (and future Hall of Famer) Steve Young signed after the fall of the spring league. Then this.

The failure to sign Bo Jackson lead to another poor season in 1986 and the first pick in the 1987 draft. Many were convinced University of Miami quarterback Vinny Testaverde was the next big franchise quarterback. Tampa was so convinced that it traded Steve Young to San Francisco for second and fourth round picks a week before the draft. Testaverde was a bust in Tampa though he did eventually play in the Pro Bowl years after leaving.

Cleveland made one of its worst picks ever in Duke linebacker Mike Junkin while the always entertaining Cardinals reached for second rounder Kelly Stouffer of Colorado State with the sixth pick overall. While Stouffer should have been exhilarated to have been taken so much higher than he deserved, he instead refused to sign with the Cards, who would lose his signing rights at the start of the next draft.

With his draft rights about to expire, St. Louis made a trade with Seattle which sent Stouffer to the Pacific Northwest, where he would throw seven touchdowns and 19 INTs, while the Cards scored a fifth round choice in '88 (RB Tony Jordan of Kansas State) as well as first (G Joe Wolf of Boston College) and fifth (DE David Edeen of Wyoming) rounders in '89.*

New Orleans once again made a terrible choice with BYU defensive lineman Shawn Knight. He registered zero sacks in his short career and was traded following the 1988 season for Denver's nose tackle Ted Gregory in an exchange of draft busts.

Below is the first round of the 1987 NFL draft. We also have the entire 12 round draft.

* Seattle tried to send safety Kenny Easley to the Cardinals for Stouffer, but he failed his physical. Unfortunately, St. Louis doctors discovered kidney damage that allegedly was the result of pain killers the Seahawks trainers had been giving him. He never played again and refused to have anything to do with the franchise.
