Super Bowl XXIVBy Patrick Mondout
San Francisco came into Super Bowl XXIV looking for its second straight
and fourth overall victory in the big game. This would put them in a tie
with the great Steelers teams of the Super70s for the most victories in
the big game. Denver, on the other hand was hoping to avoid a fourth loss
and third in the last three years. A fourth loss would tie them with the
almost great Minnesota Vikings teams of the Super70s, who also lost four
Super Bowls.
American television viewers everywhere (including Denver) cringed at
the thought of another Broncos debacle in the Super Bowl. With 24 million
fewer viewers than the year before, Denver delivered as advertised.
Joe Montana found uncovered receivers all day and John Elway failed to
find anyone open leading to what was then the biggest blowout in Super
Bowl history.
Montana received his record third MVP trophy on a 22-29, 297 yard, 5
touchdown, 0 interception performance. San Francisco's defense kept
Denver's offense off the field for nearly two-thirds of the game.
