Peter Bowles (Rumpole of the Bailey, To the Manor Born) returns as Major Sinclair Yeates, a retired English army officer appointed Resident Magistrate for the West of Ireland in the days before Irish independence. It's the mutual misunderstanding between the English and Irish that brings so much humor to the Major's attempts to bestow order upon his eccentric community, even while he strives to befriend the townspeople.

Set in the early 1900s, this PBS Masterpiece Theatre classic also stars Bryan Murray, Lise-Ann McLaughlin, Anna Manahan, Brendan Conroy, Sarah Badel and Diane Fletcher.
