Father Murphy

By Anonymous

Burly drifter John Murphy (Merlin Olsen) becomes the unlikely caretaker of a group of orphaned children growing up in America's Wild West. Touched by their plight, he poses as a priest with lovely local school teacher Mae Woodward (Katherine Cannon) and his miner buddy (Moses Gunn) assisting with the children.

Together this makeshift family gets involved in a series of adventures, encountering unscrupulous businessmen, gamblers, horse rustlers, bank robbers and much more! Created by Little House on the Prairie's Michael Landon and originally aired from 1981 to 1983, Father Murphy provides quality entertainment for the entire family, touchingly exploring the bonds of family and friendship as tested by the trials of life on the rugged frontier.

"My favorite was the pilot movie. We have been looking for it on video but can't find it anywhere. It had humor, drama, and the kind of touching warmth that is common in Michael Landon's work."

"Merlin Olson was and will always be one of my favorite atheletes as well as actors. His part in the short lived "Father Murphy Series was invaluable to the part he played as well as to the contribution his character made to the entire show.

I would be remiss if I were to ever forget the contribution by the beloved composer of "the chapter title" from Bonanza, Little House on the Prairie, Highway to Heaven themes as well as scoring all of those television shows. He is probabley best known for "The Stripper " which was a huge hit in the 60's. His name was David Rose and he was originally from England. May he, Michael Landon, Victor French and Lorne Green rest in peace.

The world is truly a better place because of Michael's work. David Rose also wrote this very moving "Father Murphy " theme song. Also of note Merlin Olson is in another movie worth watching called "The Juggler of Notre Dame". It's excellent! Lan O'Kun wrote the screen play for the Juggler of Notre Dame and wrote a number of episodes for "Highway to Heaven"! Excellent Writer!!"
