West 57thBy Patrick Mondout
While NBC spent the better part of two decades looking for a
newsmagazine show to compete with 60
Minutes, CBS itself tried to create a version of 60 Minutes for a
younger audience. West 57th was only around for parts of four
seasons, but that makes it far more successful than any of NBC's clones up
to that point.
In order to appeal to the Yuppie
crowd, the show featured reporters and correspondents who were all under
40 and featured stories on rock stars, athletes on steroids, designer
drugs, and mostly anything that didn't involve international diplomacy or
the problems of ageing.
