Indianapolis Federals History

The Indianapolis Federals (also known as Hoosiers, Hoofeds, Hoosierferds) were the first champions of the short-lived Federal League and were located in Indianapolis. The franchise, despite its on-the-field success, lasted only the one year.

In 1915, they played in Newark, New Jersey as the Newark Peppers. The move was caused by financial problems in Indianapolis.

In Indianapolis, the team played at Federal League Park and in Newark, they played at Harrison Park.

Many Hoosiers/Peppers players had American and National League experience, including Edd Roush, Ed Reulbach, and Cy Falkenberg.

Vin Campbell (seen here in a Cracker Jacks baseball card) was 5th in Federal League hitting for Indianapolis in 1914 and was 6th for the team after they moved to Newark for the 1915 season.
