Denver RacquetsBy Patrick Mondout
The Denver Racquets only lasted a single season
before moving on to Phoenix (to become, as you might have guessed, the
Phoenix Racquets), but oh what a season it was!
Player/coach Tony Roche led his team to the championship against Billie
Jean King (who he beat for Coach of the Year
honors) and her Philadelphia Freedoms.
The Racquets easily defeated the Freedoms 55-45 (27-21, 28-24) to win the
first ever World Team Tennis championship.
The Phoenix Racquets made it to the semifinals each of the next two
years and signed Chris Evert for the 1976 season. The lost in the finals
in 1977 to the New York
Sets.
It was all downhill after that loss as the team finished with the
second worst record in the league in its last season. |
