Philadelphia FreedomsBy Patrick Mondout
The Philadelphia Freedoms were one of the original 16 World Team Tennis
franchises and one of the most prominent, with Billie Jean King as
player/coach.
Elton John was a big fan of King and co-wrote (with Bernie Taupin, of
course) the song Philadelphia Freedom for her.* It went to number one in
March of 1975, which is more than can be said of the team, which disbanded
after the 1974 season.
* If you still have your 45 of
Philadelphia Freedom, check for the "Dedicated to B.J.K"
